More than a Grade: A Student Life Experience

The modern student experience is often glamorized as a whirlwind of new friendships, late-night breakthroughs, night-outs, sports, and endless opportunities. But behind the perfectly curated social media posts and the impressive resumes lies a much heavier reality. According to data from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in four students live with a diagnosable mental illness. From navigating intense academic pressures to managing financial stress and possibly social isolation, today’s students are carrying an unprecedented emotional load that is never usually visible to the public and even to themselves.

Personally, I’ve felt this exact toll. The constant anxiety of college application results and the all-nighters before exams take a significant toll on my headspace. Before each night of sleep must come a night of studying, and before each night of studying must come a lesson with a tutor - the list goes on. It’s taken me a while to finally comprehend that this is not the student life experience I should be having. Never mind student life; the general experience of adolescence should not consist of constant stress with a sprinkle of disappointment, but should instead be something we can reminisce on without feeling sorrow.

So, if you are a student who often feels overwhelmed, exhausted, or like you’re falling behind, this is your reminder: you are not alone; your struggles are completely valid, and this should not be your reality.
