Blind Boxes and Societal Trends: Do I want it or am I going with the flow?

Plush charms clipped to backpacks, limited drops, the one collectible that suddenly appears in every scroll. If you've ever bought something because it was everywhere, you're not alone. Trend cycles now move so fast that "what's in" can change before your package even arrives.

Blind boxes make this extra difficult. The surprise feels fun, but a lot of the thrill comes from the chase: pulling the rare one, posting the unboxing, getting the comments, joining the crowd.

At that point, are you enjoying the thing, or enjoying being part of the moment?

Here's a simple test. Imagine nobody would ever see it. No posts, no group chat reactions, no one noticing it on your bag. Would you still want it? If the answer is yes, great, that's real taste. If the desire disappears it was probably about belonging, and that's a very nuanced human need, that a plastic figure can't meet for long.

Following trends has this exact hidden cost. When your choices are based on what's popular, your sense of "what I like" gets foggy, and what you may consider as genuine is really a mask to fit in. Some end up with a shelf full of stuff that looks right but doesn't feel real, and a nagging feeling of being a step behind whenever the next craze arrives.

Trends also expire. What you bought to fit in this month can feel embarrassing in the next, making the whole cycle just exhausting.

But still, liking popular things isn't wrong. Sometimes the trend and your taste overlap, and that's the best case.

Try this: before buying anything hyped, wait a second and ask yourself WHY you want it. Then try collecting something nobody told you to, even if it's strange. The most satisfying collections tend to be the ones that make you say "that's so me" instead of "everyone has that."
